2026 Tax Brackets Explained Simply
A clear breakdown of South Africa’s progressive income tax bands, rebates and how they affect take-home pay in the 2026 cycle.
14 April 2026
South African personal income tax is progressive. That means different slices of your taxable income are taxed at different rates. You do not pay your top rate on every rand you earn.
For the 2026 planning cycle used on CalculatorHub SA, rates start at 18% on the lower band and step up through intermediate rates to a top marginal rate of 45% on the highest band (income above roughly R1.817 million in our model). Official thresholds are published by SARS with each Budget — always confirm the latest tax tables when you file.
Rebates change the final bill
After tax is calculated on the tables, individuals subtract rebates. The primary rebate (about R17,235 in our model) applies to everyone. Extra rebates apply from age 65 and 75. That is why two people with the same gross salary can owe different amounts.
Marginal rate vs effective rate
Your marginal rate is the rate on your next rand of taxable income. Your effective rate is total tax divided by taxable income. Effective rate is usually lower than your top band — which is why our Income Tax Calculator shows both rands of tax and an effective percentage.
Worked example
Take R450,000 taxable income, under age 65, no other deductions in a simple model. Tax is built band by band, then the primary rebate is subtracted. Monthly take-home is roughly annual net divided by 12, before UIF, medical aid and pension deductions on the payslip.
Common mistakes
Comparing job offers on gross only; ignoring age rebates; treating a web estimate as an eFiling result; forgetting that a Two-Pot withdrawal is taxed at your marginal rate.
